Hi Matt,
Thanks for the response. I didn't realize that Jive was also developing OpenID for Clearspace. I had seen a customer requesting it as an idea for your developer plugin bounty program. BTW, I'm a HUGE fan of Jive.

To your point about getting an OpenID for free with your AOL account, email provider, etc., that is what I was trying, somewhat inelegantly, to illustrate. The more options you have for what you can use as your OpenID provider, the more confusing it is to make a decision.

I'd like to see more companies accept OpenID in lieu of passwords, but chose not to provide OpenID URIs themselves. To accomplish SSO, my suspicion is that there is higher demand for accepting OpenIDs that would be provided by the existing infrastructure at the customer site than for the new system—whether it is Clearspace or any other application—to provide the OpenID URIs because the second scenario requires the existing infrastructure to be changed.

That said, I'll freely admit that I'm still just beginning to grok OpenID. I appreciate the response and clarification on what Jive is doing. It's pretty amazing for a random thought on a small blog like mine to get a response from the CTO. I'm stunned.

I agree with many of your points about the consumer experience. One thing that might help is that lots of people will get OpenID accounts "automatically" -- for example, your company could give you an OpenID account, or AOL, or your email provider. If your email login info is the same as your OpenID login, that seems pretty easy.

The reason we (Jive Software) are most interested in OpenID for Clearspace is that it provides a good open framework for SSO. Inside large organizations there are sometimes dozens of applications that users have to interact with. One could do some messy portal integrations... or use an open standard like OpenID. I think that's what's behind people asking for OpenID in Clearspace. It will be interesting to see how often it actually gets used once built...
